Promoting healthy lifestyles for children & youth
The Ngoonbi Sports and Recreation Program currently engages more than 150 children and young people.
The program employs three Sports and Recreation Engagement Officers who support community members from six years of age through to Elders. Activities take place during school hours, after school, on weekends and throughout the school holidays.
The program encourages healthy lifestyles, cultural connection and positive community participation through:
- Multi-sports, including AFL, edor, touch football, Oztag, soccer, tennis, basketball and more
- School lunchtime activities
- After-school sports and recreation
- School holiday activities and excursions
- Community touch football teams and competitions
- Boys’ groups, boxing and fitness activities
- Swimming and water-based recreation
- Walking groups and outdoor activities
- Cultural activities and on-Country experiences
- Kuranda Family Fun Days and community events
- Youth engagement activities and sporting challenges
- Healthy meals and nutrition education
- Assistance with transport to activities and events
- Sporting carnival participation and sponsorship opportunities
- Guest speakers, mentoring and positive role models
- Leadership, teamwork and confidence-building activities
- Opportunities for families and Elders to participate
- Service information, referrals and connections to further support

- Build confidence, resilience and leadership skills
- Encourage teamwork, respect and positive relationships
- Increase school engagement and community participation
- Provide safe, inclusive and supervised activities
- Reduce social isolation and harmful or risky behaviours
- Create pathways into sporting clubs, competitions and training
- Strengthen connections between children, families, Elders and the wider community
